presents stock

thrifted picnic basket

I found this large picnic basket for $6 while op-shopping in Oakleigh the other day, and thought it would be perfect for a ‘presents box’, which I’ve been meaning to set up for a little while.

The idea behind the box is that you keep a list inside of all the people you need to buy presents for in the coming year. Both birthdays and Christmas, or just Christmas. Maybe write down some ideas under each name of (ethical) things you can buy or make. If you’re super organised, you could assign a couple of gifts to concentrate on during each month of the year. You cross them off the list and keep the present in the box until it’s time to give it. Otherwise, you could just keep an eye out for ethical presents and buy them with someone in mind, even if it’s April.

So you get to spread out your expenses across the year, plus you don’t need to rush, so can choose something special that’s in line with your ethics.

Tim and I often get stuck, especially at Christmas, struggling to find a suitable gift. So we compromise our ethics to get something on time. New books are our go-to emergency present, and while they aren’t the worst ethical offenders, I’d still prefer something better.

Hopefully this will mean we don’t get stuck again.

Awesome Idea..I have done this for quite a few years now. Most years I have most of the gifts for Christmas before December starts…Saves money (buy on sale or make) and means Christmas time is more relaxed and less focused on consuming!
